Kazakhstan has signed and ratified the UN Framework Convention on Global Climate Change and intends to participate in economical mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol. The Interagency Commission on Climate Change Issues has been established to coordinate domestic efforts and manage compliance with international obligations. The Climate Change Coordination Centre (Centre) has been designated as its working body.

The Interagency Commission was authorised to coordinate projects on ozone layer protection, combating desertification, biodiversity conservation, and prevention of the trans border contamination over big distances.
