Mission

The New South Wales Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme commenced on 1 January 2003 and remains in force until 2012. The Scheme imposes mandatory greenhouse gas benchmarks on all NSW electricity retailers and certain other parties, including those who elect to manage their own benchmark, to abate the emission of greenhouse gases from the consumption of electricity in NSW. The Scheme Administrator’s primary function is the determination of applications for accreditation as an abatement certificate provider. The role of abatement certificate providers in the Scheme is to abate the emission of greenhouse gases through engaging in eligible abatement activities.

Activities

A component of the Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme is the first operational trading scheme in the world for energy efficiency certificates ('white certificates").
