Mission

IEI's objective is to promote — initiate, strengthen and advance — the efficient production and use of energy for sustainable development.

Activities

IEI focuses on developing countries. It disseminates an approach to energy, in which the level and quality of energy services is taken as the measure of development, rather than the magnitude of energy consumption and supply. IEI improves energy services through end-use efficiency measures and the increased use of environmentally cleaner new and renewable energy technologies. It ensures that market restructuring and/or liberalization in the electricity and petroleum industries focuses on measures that expand the provision of public benefits and adresses policies, regulation, institutions, financing and management issues to promote sustainable energy practices. IEI initiates and strengthens capability in energy analysis, information, advocacy, and implementation in developing countries.
