The APEC Energy Working Group (EWG) is a voluntary, regional-based forum operating under the APEC umbrella. EWG helps further APEC goals to facilitate energy trade and investment, and ensure that energy contributes to the economic, social and environmental enhancement of the APEC community. The EWG is one of 11 Working Groups currently operating under the APEC umbrella. APEC membership consists of 21 Member Economies.

The EWG seeks to maximise the energy sector’s contribution to the region’s economic and social well being, while mitigating the environmental effects of energy supply and use. The EWG contributes to decision-making through: open discussion of Members’ energy policies and planning priorities; sharing basic resource demand and supply outlook data; considering regional energy policy implications; and responing to wide-reaching energy-related issues. Ministers set out the challenge to enhance energy security by advancing five objectives: preparing for energy supply disruptions; facilitating energy investment; using energy more efficiently; expanding energy choices; and capitalising on technological innovation. To realise these objectives, Ministers instructed the EWG to develop initiatives in close cooperation with the business, research and financial communities, including the EWG Business Network, EWG Expert Groups and the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre.
