    The key objective of the African Energy Policy Research Network (AFREPREN/FWD) is to strengthen local research capacity and to harness it in the service of energy policy making and planning

  3. Activities

    AFREPREN/FWD co-ordinates a research program on the following key energy issues: - Renewables and Energy for Rural Development, - Energy Services for the Urban Poor, - Energy Sector Reform and - Special Studies of Strategic Significance for the Energy Sector in Eastern and Southern Africa. AFREPREN/FWD also co-ordinates a Masters Degree Scholarships program and Regional Training Courses as well as a national policy seminar initiative on renewables, energy policy, energy technologies and information technology aimed at enhancing research and energy policy formulation skills. Since its initiation in 1989, AFREPREN/FWD has successfully implemented over 220 national, regional and Africa-wide energy policy research projects involving over 200 African researchers and policy makers from 19 countries of eastern and southern Africa and forged close collaborative links with several northern and western African energy researchers, policy makers and institutions. The extensive energy policy studies undertaken by AFREPREN/FWD have transformed the organization into one of the key sources of publications on the African energy sector. Findings of the energy policy research studies undertaken by AFREPREN/FWD have been published in 17 major books, a special issue of the International Energy Policy journal, 27 Occasional Papers, 37 journal articles, 55 newspaper and magazine articles, 23 book chapters and over 334 Working Papers. Out of this large body of published work, AFREPREN/FWD publications on renewables and energy efficiency include: 6 major books; 14 Occasional Papers, 25 journal articles, 13 newspaper and magazine articles, 6 book chapters, and 96 Working Papers.
