Mission

To provide favorable conditions for the electric energy market to develop in an environment of balance among industry players and to the benefit of society.

The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency, Aneel, is a quasi-governmental organization established under a special regime with a public law legal personality and asset, administrative and financial autonomy, as provided for under Law 9,427, dated December 26, 1996.

Aneel started its activities on December 2, 1997, following the enactment of Decree 2,335/97, which sanctioned its structural regime.

The Agency was established as part of a State reform process to perform the role of the regulatory and inspection body in the electric energy sector. Its structure comprises only two hierarchical levels. The Board of Directors, consisting of a Director- General and four Directors, deliberates under collegiate rules of procedure. At the other level, twenty Superintendents, whose roles are based upon organizational processes, both technical and administrative, carry out Aneel’s actions.
