The major source for generating electricity in Tanzania is hydro power. Petroleum and coal are also being used as commercial power sources. Power is transmitted and distributed through a single government utility (TANESCO).
Two thirds of the national installed capacity is hydro powered. Owing to the vulnerability of hydropower to draught, some thermal power stations have been installed in most areas.
Draughts that have persisted in the country in recent years have had severe impacts on the electrical power supply. These resulted into low water levels in the hydro dams perpetuating into repeated blackouts and power rationing. Fossil fuels have been adopted but are all dear and pollutant.
Apparently, too, the power generated is only accessible to about 10 percent of the population and mostly in the urban areas. The rural areas that embrace over 80 percent of the population almost entirely depend on wood fuel for their energy requirements that results into much deforestation.
Windmill technologies and solar thermal applications have not been adequately attempted as alternatives to electrical power supply in the country. Intensifying and extensifying the use of wind energy and solar thermal would highly contribute to the current threatening deforestation and save the zone layer.
The government has openly shown interest in supporting renewable energy development initiatives and a policy to empower the private sector to engage in the renewable energy research and development is in place.
Renewable Energy Development Company (T) Limited will contribute to the overall renewable energy utilization and over the time will:
- Develop, fabricate and install windmills for electricity and water – pumping
- Harness solar power for photovoltaic and thermal heating
- Promote electrical back-up systems for use in main power prone areas
- Reinvent the recycling of fossil fuel particularly the engine oil
- Develop Biogas technologies
- Install mini hydro power stations
