Mission

The Tonga Energy Road Map (TERM) is a ten year road map to reduce Tonga's vulnerability to oil price shocks and achieve an increase in quality access to modern energy services in an environmentally sustainable manner.

 

Activities

The overall responsibility for the implementation of the TERM lies with the TERM Committee, the Project Coordination Committee. The TERM Implementation Unit is tasked with the day-to-day management and implementation of the TERM. The Unit also provides specialist support and secretarial services to the TERM Committee The TERM outlines the necessary actions required over the next ten years (2010-2020) by the private sector, Tonga Power Limited, Government and its development partners to: - Address Tonga's high dependence on imported fuels - Decrease the cost of electricity - Reduce Tonga's vulnerability to oil price shocks - Increase access to quality and modern energy services (particularly in rural areas) - Address issues in the institutional, legislative and regulatory frameworks governing energy in Tonga Planned activities: - develop grid-connected renewable energy options - increase energy efficiency - assess prospective resources available for energy generation - review petroleum pricing structures - enhance the supply chain of petroleum - coordinate institutional, legislative and regulatory reform - create an Off-grid Utility, responsible for providing households in remote locations with power - improve services to off-grid households - ensure all islands are electrified
