Mission

The Energy Unit is tasked with managing and reforming Vanuatu's energy sector with the aim of promoting the use of local energy resources, ensuring that adequate, reliable and affordable energy supplies are available at reasonable costs and that the supply of electrification into rural areas through funded projects is enhanced.
 

Activities

- To extend electrical networks mainly in Port Vila, Luganville, Malekula and Tanna. - To connect households to pre-existing electrical grid systems, such as in Port Vila where there are areas still unconnected to the town's power grid. - To maintain and install more street lighting primarily in Luganville. - To continuously monitor and upgrade the Sarakata Hydropower Station. - To create energy legislation with, the Electricity and National Energy Corporation Acts already drafted that needs to be finalised for parliamentary endorsement. - To explore alternative energy resources with the focus being primarily on indigenous energy resources with an emphasis on biofuel. Also, consultation are to be made with other Regional and International Agencies concerning alternative energy technologies. - To reduce electricity costs. - To mitigate the effects of high petroleum costs.
